Visitors to Japan often ask whether they’ll be able to “get by” with speaking only English and/or just a few words of Japanese during their stay. The short answer to that question is yes. The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) is the international hub for research on Japanese language, linguistics, and Japanese-language education for non-native speakers.

The mission of the Japanese as a Second Language Special Interest Group (JSL SIG) is to serve as a resource for promoting JSL/JFL teaching, learning, and research. Founded in 1979, MIT Working Papers in Linguistics is an entirely student-managed organization, run by the graduate students in the MIT Doctoral Program in Linguistics. MITWPL is dedicated to promoting student linguistic research by publishing dissertations and papers and, with the proceeds, equitably funding travel, fieldwork and equipment purchases.
History. The first beginnings of the association began with a casual get-together (based on an interest in the Silent Way teaching method) organised in 1975 by Sharon Bode, then Chief Instructor at the Kyoto YMCA. A subsequent meeting was held at the National L.L.
