There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of sites professing
to provide you with comparisons between the various brands of tractors
and most don’t deliver. The truth is many don’t want to stick
their necks out and make claims about their rival’s products fearing
the consequential retaliatory rebuttal they in turn will face. Below
I have reviewed only a couple of lawn tractors for you as a sampler.
The John Deere LX 277
The reason for my choice in reviewing this lawn tractor
was simple, John Deere is renowned for their excellence in
lawn tractors and the feedback for this model has been consistently
positive. Amongst the reasons for high praise and compliments
for this particular model is the fact that it is both easy
to use, extremely durable and highly functional with several
attachments giving it the versatility it requires given its
perhaps, as some would argue, prohibitive cost. But the LX
is essentially the best in the John Deere range with the
other option being the LT line. Features included are cruise
control, cup holder, an adjustable seat (high-back), front
lights and a 2 year warranty.
With a 17 Hp V-twin Kawasaki engine this lawn tractor can
handle almost anything!! The engine crank case is pressurized
ensuring all the internal parts are fully lubricated so that
there is no unnecessary wear. There is also a two-pedal automatic
transmission system (one for the forwards direction and the
other for reversing) so there is no need to stop and change
gears this is done automatically. But note it does NOT cut
in reverse. In terms of the decking on the JD it comes with
a 42” convertible deck as standard (by convertible
this means that it can be changed depending on whether you
want to use it for mulching, bagging or side-discharging).
(Approx $4-5000)
Scotts S1742
Again this was another model of lawn tractor that had received
numerous reviews of praise namely saying that it was reliable,
low maintenance, durable and better priced when compared
with say the JD. John Deere, however, manufacture the S1742
so I like to think of it as a JD1742 without the price!!
Most of the body is steel, not plastic and all is galvanized
or painted to prevent rusting. Then there is the 17HP Briggs & Stratton
commercial engine which is relatively quiet and very powerful.
It has a good, tight turning circle due to a shorter deck.
In terms of its safety the Scott has all the same features
as the other brands. There is a 5-speed manual transmission.
(Approx $1500)
