Tractor Implements

A ”tractor implement” is an attachment that requires the momentum or power of the tractor and can not run independently without the tractor. Tractor implements are used for tasks in every rural work.

“Tractor implements” or as they are more commonly known as tractor accessories or parts include things such as:-

  • Finish mowers
  • Box-scrapers or box-blades
  • Back-hoes
  • Front-end loaders or scoops
  • Rotary mowers or so called “Bushhogs”
  • Fertilizer distributors
  • Straight blades
  • Breaking plows
  • A variety of different rakes
  • Boom poles
  • Discs
  • Cultivators
  • Diggers
  • Subsoilers
  • One-row Plows
  • Universal Ford Bumpers
  • Utility Trailers, and so on.
  •
  • These are usually purchased at an additional cost to the tractor as they are generally not included in the standard tractor package unnecessary negotiated or bargin in.

By far one of the most popular tractor implements would have to be the front-end loader. The uses for this are countless, from shovelling and removing large quantise of turf, dirt, fertiliser you name it. It has even been known to be used to carry around other equipment around. If it is used for large heavy jobs then a counter-weight at the rear of the tractor is advisable and will provide greater traction keeping the tractor in firm contact with the ground even whilst lifting these heavy loads. It is important that when attached a front-end loader should be kept low to the ground especially when driving loaded, this helps prevent any disequilibrium that may cause the tractor to unbalance and tip over.

Plows and discs serve the function of preparing the ground for sowing. There are a number of different plows which can be attached.

Rotary mowers or as the are more fondly called ‘bushog’ are also extremely popular. It is important to install the right size of rotary mower for your tractor otherwise if it is too small it becomes incredible fuel inefficient, whilst if it is too big it can quickly over-work your tractor or cause imbalancing.

So as a rough guide if you own a relatively modest sized tractor, say between 30-45 HP, then a 5 ft rotary mower would probably serve you best. . It is important to keep people away while cutting as there may be considerable air-borne stuff as a result of the mower…they tend to produce a lot of debris.

Beware of any implements such as front-end loaders that are being sold as homemade they are generally of poorer quality and will not last.
